The Town of Waitsfield, Vermont, seeks a collaborative and creative professional Town Administrator. This full-time, on-site position at the Town Office offers competitive benefits and a unique opportunity to serve a town where the traditions of community, recreation, commerce, conservation, agriculture, and civic engagement continue to be valued. The Town Administrator is appointed by the Town’s five-member Selectboard; responsibilities include but are not limited to:
- acting as the primary liaison between the public and the Selectboard;
- exercising discretion and autonomy in collaboration with the Selectboard in enacting policies, decisions, and programmatic directives;
- communicating with local and State agencies and the public, including residents, contractors, media, and external organizations;
- preparing an annual budget for the Town in consultation with the Selectboard, coordinating appropriate input from other Town departments, boards, and committees (the Town has a combined budget of just < $2.7 million);
- administering the Town budget after its adoption;
- acting as the Selectboard’s agent in the supervision of municipal employees (of which there are approximately 8); and,
- fostering a healthy work environment within the Town Office
The ideal candidate for this position is organized, has excellent written and verbal communication skills, and is comfortable navigating the management of long-term projects while addressing the community’s immediate needs in a public-facing work environment.
A Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in business administration or public administration, or equivalent subjects is preferred, along with three to six years of experience in local government, planning, administration, business administration, or an equivalent combination. However, the position is open to applicants with education and career paths outside of public administration with demonstrably transferable skills, experience, and/or training. Salary range, initially listed as $70,000-$80,000 plus full generous health and retirement benefits; salary may be adjusted commensurate with candidate’s experience.
